Who Is JSG?
Jennifer Secrist Goran, CPF, is the owner, designer and chief framer of JSG Exquisite Custom Framing. A highly trained & Certified Picture Framer (CPF) since 1988 and active member of the PPFA, she has been providing quality custom framing to artists, collectors and designers for over 30 years.
Mrs. Secrist Goran began working as a full time picture framer in 1986 in the heart of California’s wine country, Napa. There she worked side by side with the owner creating quality custom framing and assisting with art auctions. In 1988 she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and worked along side many of the region’s top artists at Amsterdam Art in Berkeley. After a short time she was promoted to assistant manager and then manager. Mrs Secrist Goran enjoyed the creative clientele and access to all of the tools she needed to create some of the most sophisticated and creative framing designs around. She created a loyal following of clients and oversaw a crew of 8 skilled framers.
After 12 years of running this successful frame shop, Mrs Secrist Goran opened JSG Exquisite Custom Framing in an artist’s loft in the Fruitvale District of Oakland. Although she was only open 1 day a week by appointment she was quickly too busy for just one person to handle. She brought in long time framer and artist, Tim Metallo. JSG Exquisite Custom Framing continued to thrive and grow.
When Mrs Secrist Goran’s first son was born she decided to step back from working so many hours and focus on raising her son. Her husband’s career brought them across the country to Tallahassee, Florida and then half way back again to their now permanent home in Boulder, Colorado. In 2005 JSG Exquisite Custom Framing was relaunched as a home studio in the Holiday/NOBO area of North Boulder and continues to offer the high caliber customer service, products and creativity that have made her a favorite among her clientele for over 30 years!
In addition to providing excellent custom framing services, Mrs Secrist Goran ran a popular series of mat cutting classes in the San Francisco Bay Area, teaching other framers, artists and craftspersons the fine art of matting & framing.
She also is the owner, instructor and troupe director of The Nawaar Marketplace & Dance Company. She has vast experience creating custom costuming, jewelry and accessories. In addition to framing, costuming and dance, Jennifer enjoys up cycling and upholstering furniture, creating artwork using various medias and woodworking.
She can use these diverse creative skills and expertise to make your picture framing unique & memorable.

About the PPFA, Certification & the CPF Title
What is the PPFA?
The Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA) is a trade association representing the art and framing industry whose main goal has been to raise the professional standards of picture framers. The PPFA was founded in 1971 by a small group of California retailers. Within 2 months membership had increased by more than 5000 percent. Now, 30 years later, the PPFA is a strong national and international organization which has helped to inform, unify and educate thousands of picture framers and their clients.
What does it mean to be certified?
To become a Certified Picture Framer, or CPF, a framer must first work for a frameshop that is a member the PPFA. Then the framer may take the Certified Picture Framer Examination, an intensive exam designed to test the knowledge and understanding of the framer in all areas of picture framing. The examination program was developed in 1986 by the PPFA in conjunction with Educational Testing Services (a nonprofit corporation who is best known for national admissions testing programs and conducting licensing and certification programs in occupational and professional areas). In developing the CPF program, the PPFA sought the expertise of industry leaders representing a wide range of educational backgrounds and proven talents in the picture framing industry.
The objective of the certification program is to:
- Raise the standards of the profession.
- Encourage self-assesment by offering guidelines for achievement.
- Identify persons with acceptable knowledge of principles and practices of the profession.
- Award recognition to those who have met the established criteria.
- Improve education within the industry by encouraging participation in continuing education programs.
All custom picture frameshops concerned with maintaining the highest professional standards, using the proper archival materials and the most current techniques become certified members of the PPFA. Those certified thru the PPFA can use the title of Certified Picture Framer or CPF.
